Creative Facilitation 101

Session Description:

In this interactive workshop, we’re inviting artists to step into the messy and transformative process of creating with—not just for—others. This session is a space to stretch your collaborative muscles and imagine new ways of building meaningful, collective, creative experiences. Together, we’ll explore values and methods that can be used to guide co-creative processes. We’ll open by sharing our values for co-creation, carefully compiled based on our personal and professional experiences with co-design in Baltimore. Then, we’ll break out into teams to address a speculative design challenge related to co-creating vibrant arts communities. Each team will move through a guided, iterative co-creation process—from ideation to lo-fi prototyping with LEGOs, pipe cleaners, cardboard, magazines, and an assortment of crafty-scrappy materials.

Teams will practice:

1) visual thinking

2) rapid prototyping

3) collective decision making

4) sharing thoughtful critiques

The session ends with share-outs and reflections on how we each show up in creative collaborations—what we’re proud of, what we’re still learning, and how we want to grow. This session is for the artists who appreciate process as much as outcome, and for those who are trying to listen better, lead differently, and create together. This workshop is open to all but best suited for participants who are beginners in facilitation and co-creative processes.
