Bullis School seeks a Technical Director & Theatre Arts Teacher to contribute to our vibrant learning community for the 2024-2025 academic year. This position manages equipment, systems, and theatrical elements of the performance spaces and scene shop for the art department and community use while also serving in a teaching capacity to develop and implement technical theatre academic courses for middle and upper school. Additionally, this is a full-time benefits-eligible position reporting to the Upper School Arts Department Chair and the Director of the Arts. The assignment includes teaching three to four classes and supervising an Upper School technical theatre crew to support three to four main-stage theatrical productions across the year.

The Bullis Arts program promotes that the arts are best appreciated by an active and hands-on involvement in the experiential and academic study of theatre arts. As such, the position requires a professional with strong collaborative and technical theatre arts skills who can implement a program of learning that is foundational in practice and allows for scaffolding to enable student choice and agency. Essential Functions

Technical Director

Lead the after-school technical theatre activity in support of 3-4 major productions
Coordinate support for other arts events/performances in collaboration with additional technical support resources
Train, guide, and mentor students in a range of technical theater elements, including set design and construction, sound, lighting, props, and stage management
Collaborate effectively and positively with others to further advance department goals and initiatives
Effectively communicate and collaborate with the Co-Theater Directors, relevant arts department members, building coordinator, and school leaders to support the production team, student, and departmental success, as well as ensure that technical resources are available and operational for community events
Be available for occasional weekend work sessions, until mid-evening during tech weeks, and for performances under the tech director’s purview
Enhance students’ active, experiential, and hands-on learning to develop student agency and independence
Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning using a variety of methods and approaches
Demonstrate a positive, solution-oriented approach to teamwork and collaboration
Host regular production meetings and attend periodic department or divisional meetings as required
Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, school counselors, and administrators regarding student progress, as appropriate.

Classroom Teaching

Teach 3-4 theatre arts classes, in the areas of Technical Theatre and Design, for MS/US students
Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy
Collaborate effectively with theatre department members to further advance department goals and initiatives, including curriculum development
Enhance students’ active, experiential, and hands-on learning to develop student agency and independence
Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning using a variety of methods and approaches
Demonstrate a positive, solution-oriented approach to teamwork and collaboration
Remain current in pedagogical practices and field-related trends
Attend periodic department or divisional meetings as required
Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, school counselors, and administrators regarding student progress, as appropriate.
Design and implement assessments that measure progress toward academic standards and provide timely feedback to students
Use the student learning management system to provide timely feedback, grades, and assignments

Other Duties

Additional duties as assigned by the US Arts Department Chair (Academic), Director of Arts (extracurricular), or Head of Upper School

Required Education And Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts or a related field (for classroom teaching)
Experience teaching middle or secondary-level students
Must be able to work some nights and weekends

Preferred Education And Experience

Master’s Degree in Theatre Arts, Education, or a related field
Proficiency with Windows or Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software
